Our History

The Guignard Legacy

Dr. Jane Bruce Guignard, one of South Carolina’s first female physicians, believed deeply in caring for the whole person by nurturing the mind, body, and spirit. In her final years, this belief inspired her vision for a retirement community where widows in the Columbia area could age with dignity, well-being, and grace, surrounded by beauty. To make that dream possible, she left her family’s West Columbia home, property, and an endowment to the Episcopal Church to establish what would become Still Hopes.

The Vision of Still Hopes

Over the past fifty years, Dr. Guignard’s vision has grown through the generosity and dedication of many. The Tradition of Giving that began with her original bequest continues to shine as a source of hope for older adults, their families, and the Columbia community. As we celebrate fifty years since our founding, we honor the gifts of time, talent, vision, and love that have made Still Hopes the exceptional retirement community it is today.
