What is a triathlon?

A triathlon is an athletic event that consists of three sports including: swimming, bicycling and running (in that order). Each of these events is performed in a continuous fashion without stopping. Triathlons are considered to be an endurance sport although there are varying race lengths. Our program is designed to train the beginner athlete to perform a sprint triathlon (350+ meter swim, 13 mile bike, 3.1 mile run). During a race, athletes compete for the fastest overall time although each event is timed.

Why would I want to train for a triathlon?

This is a great question! Depending on your goals, there are a variety of reasons this may be a good program for you!  You may be an experienced athlete looking to challenge yourself in a new way or seeking to fine tune your performance in a multisport event.  You may be a beginner looking for some excitement and motivation to get moving and get in shape and our program will provide you with a safe, gradual and non-threatening environment to do that.

When you set a goal, to do a race for example, you are more likely to follow through and complete your training goals. By participating in a team training program with the ultimate goal of doing a triathlon, you’re likely to experience many positive outcomes including:

  • Improved self confidence
  • Improved physical fitness
  • Improved endurance
  • Improved sleep
  • Better overall health
  • A sense of accomplishment
  • BRAGGING RIGHTS!

Once you complete the race, you can call yourself a Triathlete!  Who wouldn’t want to do that?

What will the training program involve?

The program will focus on improving your swimming, biking and running technique, form and endurance slowly and gradually over the course of the 20-week program. You will need to know how to swim (freestyle or breast stroke), but your swimming style or stroke does not need to be perfect; we will improve upon what you already do. You must know how to ride a bicycle and feel reasonably comfortable doing so. You do not need to be a runner! You must be able to walk for at least 20 minutes at a brisk pace to consider participation. Participants can plan on swimming three days per week, biking three days per week and walking/running 3 days per week. We will also balance these workouts with two strength or cross training sessions in our state-of-the-art wellness center on our Keiser strength equipment.

What will I need to purchase to participate?

Other than a can-do attitude, you will need: a swimsuit, goggles, swim cap (optional), a bicycle, helmet and running shoes and a large water bottle. We will discuss race apparel in detail so you can decide what you will be most comfortable wearing during our event. Recommended/Optional items: Cycling gloves, biking shoes, bike shorts, sunglasses, a hat. Training without proper safety equipment is prohibited.

Do I need a bike?

Yes, you will need to have a bike to do the training and for the race. It does not have to be YOUR bike, but it should fit you well. You can use a mountain bike if that is all you have available, but you will be at a disadvantage because the gears are different from a road bicycle as are the tires. You do not have to spend thousands of dollars on a bicycle for the event. A mid-level bicycle will be fine while you train and race to see if you like the sport!

I don’t know if I can run, can I still do the race?

Yes, you have two options if running is difficult or painful for you. You can either work on power-walking, walk-jog, or you can partner with another team member who can do the running portion for you and participate as a relay team. Running the event is not necessary; you may walk the run portion as long as you finish the entire event in less than 2.5 hours.

What is the cost of the program?

Our program cost is based on the cost of joining our wellness program for six months, the training program that is specifically designed for adults, and all of the instruction you will receive in the next 20 weeks. The package includes:

  • The 20-week training program
  • Unlimited use of the wellness center (including full range of state-of-the-art fitness machines)
  • Pool use
  • Unlimited group exercise classes (including water aerobics)
  • Training sessions
  • Informational meetings
  • Technique instruction sessions (swim, bike, run, nutrition, etc.)
  • Team t-shirt

The cost of joining the wellness center is $260, and the program cost is $150, which brings the total to $410.

What hours are the training sessions held?

The hours will be before and after traditional business hours. We realize that many of you work full-time, and we want to accommodate your schedules. We will publicize free swim times, cross training, guided bike and run classes. You will also need to do some workouts on your own time.

Feel free to contact us with any additional questions you may have.
We would love to have you join our team!
