2010 Spring Travel Excursions

My Hometown in Bloom Tours - Marion and Cheraw

Marion:  "The Swampfox City"

Our tour of Marion, named for Revolutionary War General Frances Marion, was led by town historian Tommy Lett.  A beautiful small Victorian town, we enjoyed the scenic drive through Marion in spring bloom.  Highlights of the trip included the Francis Marion statue and the town square, a tour through one of the historic homes, and a stop at the Marion County Museum.  Lunch at O'Hara's Century House Inn was included.  Before heading home, we visited the SC Tobacco Museum.

Cheraw:  "The Prettiest Town in Dixie"

Our tour guide, Sarah Spruill, gave us a driving tour of the historic district and pointed out interesting spots along the way.  The tour also included visits to the historic Lyceum (c.1770).  We enjoyed a special catered luncheon and spent time browsing the antique and gift shops downtown before heading home!

Savannah and St. Simon Island, Georgia

The adventure began with the Legends & Lunch Savannah River Cruise catered by Paula Dean’s restaurant The Lady & Sons! We learned about the eco-system of the river and the economic role it plays; we saw historic sights like Old Fort Jackson, and heard tales of pirates and sunken Civil War ironclads.

St. Simon’s Island was next.  We enjoyed oceanfront accommodations at the King and Prince Resort, known for legendary blending of gracious Southern hospitality, historic charm, and seaside setting. In the afternoons we relaxes at the resort, took a walks on the beach, or went shopping at Pier Village. Before dinner in the resort dining room, we gathered for cocktails on the beach.

After breakfast, will enjoyed a trolley tour of the island. The drive-by included the Lighthouse, one of only three working lighthouses in Georgia; Bloody Marsh, site of the famous 1742 battle where the fate of the Southern Colonies was decided; Fort Frederica, the colonial town and fort settled by General James Edward Oglethorpe; Retreat Plantation, where relics from the slavery era still exist; and this is the only trolley tour on St. Simons Island that takes you inside historic Christ Church. After the tour we departed for home with a stop for lunch.
