How to Stay Cool in Summer Heat and Symptoms of Hyperthermia

One of the normal effects of growing older is the body’s lessened ability to cool itself in hot summer temperatures. The best defense against the heat of summer is to drink plenty of fluids. Symptoms of hyperthermia or heatstroke include
• Lack of energy
• Lack of appetite
• Dizziness
• Muscle cramps
• Diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting
• Excessive weakness
• Breathing problems
• Dry skin with no perspiration
• Chest pain

To help someone who may be experiencing heatstroke
• Loosen clothing
• Elevate the head above the body
• Drink cool water or eat ice chips
• Bathe the head and body in cool water
• Seek medical assistance

To learn more about heatroke or how Solutions for Living at Home can help you stay cool this summer, call 803.223-6172.

When Should I Worry About Memory Loss

Award winning writer Martha Lear spoke with Jon Keith about her timely book:  “Where Did I Leave My Glasses: The What, When, Where of NORMAL Memory Loss.”  This interview will relieve many of the worries about memory loss and Alzheimer’s.  It is a very entertaining interview and a wonderful book.  Take a listen!!

Martha Weinman Lear authored two bestselling books:  Heartsounds (which was made into a Peabody award-winning film) and The Child Worshipers.  A former staff writer for the New York Times Magazine, Lear continues to write articles for national magazines.  She lives in New York City with her husband, screenwriter Albert Ruben.

Interviews & Insights with Jon Keith

This is the second in a series of interesting interviews conducted by our very own Jon Keith (Director of Marketing at Still Hopes).   From time-to-time Jon will share his Interviews & Insights that will include audio recordings of his broadcasts on Public Radio.

This is Part 2 of my interview with Dr. Gene Cohen. We have had lot of positive feedback about this interview. We had one person order his book for her son’s birthday. There are a lot of books out now to help baby boomers deal with how to slow the physical aging process or how to have a financially secure retirement.  However, Dr. Gene Cohen chooses a unique direction: he shows how to be a creative individual well into old age. Replete with anecdotes of famous and not-so-famous people doing incredibly creative things (e.g., architect I.M. Pei designing the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum at 79), whether for the good of humanity or simply for their own families, the book   The Creative Age: Awakening Human Potential in the Second Half of Life.

At the time of our conversation, Dr. Cohen was director of the Center on Aging, Health and Humanities at George Washington University. Unfortunately, he passed away in 2009, but his wit, humor and intellect still shines through in this interview I had with him.  I hope you enjoy it.
