Still Hopes Celebrates Arbor Day

On Thursday, December 1st at 4:00 p.m., Still Hopes will plant a 7 foot tall Cryptomeria in celebration of Arbor Day. We will also recognize our 150 year old Southern Red Oak which won the 2011 Treasured Tree award. The award is sponsored by the Columbia Garden Club, the City of Columbia, and the Columbia Tree and Appearance Commission.

A formal Arbor Day program will be held on the Mansion Veranda with comments from Tim Womick, who is often referred to as the modern-day Johnny Appleseed. For over a decade he has crossed America planting trees at schools, parks and other places, while also planting seeds of thought in the minds of those he meets. Children are invited to plant acorns from the Treasured Tree on the grounds of Still Hopes following the ceremony.

Still Hopes is proud to announce that we are an ICAA Champion
Organization. ICAA stands for the International Council on Active Aging
and is an organization dedicated to uniting and supporting communities
that include older adults in all dimensions of wellness. Still Hopes
shares a vision with ICAA of the need to dispel society’s myths, which
are primarily negative, about aging.

As an ICAA Champion, Still Hopes will work with media, marketers,
families, and individuals about the untapped human potential associated
with aging. We will help create positive messages to counter negative
stereotyping. The Still Hopes organization has become a role model for
dignity and human potential, exemplifying and supporting older adults’
values to society and continuing purpose in life.

Still Hopes Presents WE CAN Prevent, Treat, and Beat Colon Cancer

On July 20 Solutions for Living at Home will partner with USC’s Cancer Research Center to present “WE CAN! Prevent, Treat, and Beat Colon Cancer” for staff, residents, and the West Columbia/Cayce community. The program is supported by a grant from The Duke Endowment, and is free and open to the public — no products or services will be sold. Topics include colon cancer awareness, and information and resources on getting screened for colon cancer.

The event will be held in the Garden Room at Still Hopes from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. No registration is required.

Rebranding Aging in America

A ground-breaking movement aimed at shifting society’s perceptions of aging and countering aging stereotypes was launched on Monday, May 9 in the Washington, D.C. area. The “Rebranding Aging” initiative is spearheaded by ICAA, led by CEO Colin Milner with support from fitness expert Kathy Smith, who will serve as a spokesperson for the movement.

“Rebranding Aging” will leverage the numbers, needs, desires and purchasing power of the 50+ market to win the attention of marketers and the media.
