On Thursday, December 1st at 4:00 p.m., Still Hopes will plant a 7 foot tall Cryptomeria in celebration of Arbor Day. We will also recognize our 150 year old Southern Red Oak which won the 2011 Treasured Tree award. The award is sponsored by the Columbia Garden Club, the City of Columbia, and the Columbia Tree and Appearance Commission.

A formal Arbor Day program will be held on the Mansion Veranda with comments from Tim Womick, who is often referred to as the modern-day Johnny Appleseed. For over a decade he has crossed America planting trees at schools, parks and other places, while also planting seeds of thought in the minds of those he meets. Children are invited to plant acorns from the Treasured Tree on the grounds of Still Hopes following the ceremony.

For more information contact Kirsten Moorman at 739-5006 or Jon Keith at 739-5041.

“In 2008, Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community was designated as a Wildlife Habitat. The community consists of 38 acres situated off Knox Abbott Drive in West Columbia. Fifteen of these acres are designated as a perpetual memorial forest, and it is a wonderful space treasured by residents and staff alike.

A walking trail, complete with exercise stations make it most inviting as a place to be outdoors…”

They are high enough to avoid back pains when planting and picking vegetables. Each bed is set up with a timed drip irrigation system so watering is automatic. This has been especially helpful in the very warm summer days we have been having. All we have to do is plant the seed or plants, pull a few weeds, and harvest the crop. For me and several other residents this is a favorite activity. There is nothing like watching seed grow and produce a crop of tasty fresh vegetables. I enjoy sharing the fresh vegetables with other residents who are always so appreciative.

The Wellness Program at Still Hopes serves about 500 residents, staff and people living in the local area and has peaked the interest of the International Council on Active Aging. According to Denise J. Heimlich, MS, Director of Wellness:

“The combination of research-based programming and assessment has proven itself at Still Hopes. Transition rates from independent living to higher levels of care have significantly slowed, in part due to increases in physical fitness. Residents talk of being taller, walking farther, being brave enough to go on African safari and climbing in and out of Land Rovers with more agility and ease than people half their age.”

“My job is to help people stay more independent for a longer period of time. Because our program can produce documentation of program results, we have established Still Hopes as a premier wellness provider and are rapidly growing our memberships from the local community.”
